Home Schooling (Elective Home Education)

Home schooling (officially termed Elective Home Education or EHE in the UK) is a legal choice for parents to educate their children outside of the formal school system. As of January 2026, it remains a popular and growing alternative, governed by specific legal and practical frameworks.

• Responsibility: Parents take full legal and financial responsibility for their child’s education.
• Quality of Education: The education provided must be efficient, full-time, and suitable to the child's age, ability, aptitude, and any special educational needs.
  • Efficient: Achieves what it sets out to achieve.
  • Suitable: Prepares the child for life in modern society.
• Curriculum: You do not have to follow the National Curriculum, work to a fixed timetable, or be a qualified teacher.
• Registration: If your child has never been to school, you are not generally required to register them with the local authority. ​
